The Manali Medical Aid Project

In support of their mission, and for the access to healthcare for all

Updates from the Project Managers

21 November: What a year! Following a meeting between the Project and Lady Willingdon Hospital, 30,000 AUD in raised funds has been allocated to priority areas (such as the poor patients fund, healthcare for the children of local orphanages, the purchase of pulse oximeters, and the development of community health initiatives in remote locations such as Jibhi).

Furthermore 10-20,000 AUD of equipment and supplies (gloves, surgical supplies, biPAP ventilator, etc) has been directly sourced and donated to the hospital. A final figure for this will be released shortly. A big thank you to our sponsors (page soon to be updated - so check again!).

10 September: We are pleased to announce that the project has been awarded the QETI Excellence Award for "Best Practice in International Collaboration".

May 28: We are pleased to announce that the project is the recipient of the 'UQ Vice Chancellor's Equity and Diversity Award' for 2009.

April 22: Cooper Grace Ward Lawyers are kindly providing us with pro bono help in our quest to attain charity and tax-deductible gift recipient (DGR) status - we'll keep you posted on developments.

WELCOME TO THE MANALI MEDICAL AID PROJECT HOMEPAGE

The Manali Medical Aid Project is an initiative of University of Queensland (UQ) medical students.

The Opportunity
Manali is a hill-station in the Himalayan mountains of Northern India. The people are poor; and there is a substantial population of Nepalese, Tibetan and Kashmiri refugees in the surrounding region. In this environment, the Lady Willingdon Hosptial provides health care to all, irrespective of ability to pay or other background. Also known as Mission Hospital, this charity hospital serves both Manali and a number of villages and shanty-towns that are often isolated by rough weather and terrain. In doing all this, the hospital has little resources for further development or renewal of old equipment. They are thus dependant on donations for the majority of capital expenses.

Our Solution, The Project
The rapidly expanding Manali Medical Aid Project aims to pair the urgent medical and community needs of the hospital team with the passions and interests of local and international sponsors. The project utilises UQ medical students as ambassadors directly taking part in funded initiatives during their medical elective in Manali and, upon return, reporting back to sponsors and the local community. This ensures that the money raised by the MMAP is spent on sub-projects in accordance with donors’ wishes. In the past, we have funded the purchase of much-needed medical equipment, the vaccination of schools, the training of community health workers, and much more.

This student-run project is not-for-profit, and all donations through us are passed in their entirety to the hospital for the purchase of medical equipment and supplies/medications. All administrative costs incurred are paid for by the students running the project (with the help of pro bono services provided by Gregory Terrace and Cooper Grace Ward Lawyers). As a fully-transparent project, all information regarding the expenditure of donations is published at the conclusion of each year.
